Use the guiding questions that we came up with in class to describe a standards-based lesson. This lesson could be one that you make up or one that you watch on video. Important: Be sure that your learning objective aligns with a curriculum standard.
I. Standard Benchmark(s) and Learning Objective:
Students will be able to: Understand that "thoughtshots" (flashback, flash-forward, in the moment) are one of the tools writers can use to bring the reader into the inner world of the character. Revise their drafts by pinpointing a part of their story where a thoughtshot is needed and add one to enhance the scene. Students demonstrate use of narrative strategies by...Developing characters through description, dialogue, and actions
II. The Learning Environment
Students use a student created Writer's Notebook as a resource for past lessons. The handouts provided by the teacher are organized and placed in this notebook for current and future reference.
Prior to this lesson, the students have had numerous lessons about using ways to "show and not tell."
III. The Learning Activities
Teacher allows students to take out their drafts & notebooks
Explain why thoughtshots are important - what character is thinking, feeling, dreaming, imagining
Ask relevant questions to students - engage them into lesson plan, before explaining what each type of thoughshot is ask students what they think each type of thoughshot means
flashback: character recalls what occurred in past
flashahead: pondering future
in the moment: at the time how character feels
Give examples by reading exerupts from a previous text the children have read and point out thoughtshots. Ask children what they think the character is thinking just by reading what is wrote. Teacher creates a web on over head projector to show what children are saying.
Teacher goes around and asks each children individually how they are doing with their stories, and giving advice about transitions and giving more detail for thoughshots
End of class students will share with class what they completed today, show which sections they edited in their papers
